While Hong Kong plans to implement its new competition commission next month, reports say the effects of such a new authority remain uncertain, especially as the commissioners still have yet to be named.
The head of consultancy Asian Competition, Mark Williams, spoke with reporters to discuss the impact of the new regulator, noting that the future commissioners will have as much of an impact its effects in Hong Kong as new legislation will.
Reports say Hong Kong plans to implement its full commission staff by next spring, though the new authority’s stance on merger reviews, exclusionary abuses, and other antitrust matters cannot be predicted until then. As such, Williams said he does not expect the new commission’s effects to truly come to light until at least 2015.
The ordinance to establish a competition commission was passed in 2012.
