China: Antitrust officials planning telco sweep to lower prices, say sources

Following consumer complaints, antitrust regulators are reportedly set on cutting telecommunications service charges for customers for the remaining months of the years, said a Chinese newspaper. The paper, citing anonymous sources, says telecommunications charges are frequently the focus of antitrust investigations. Now, the National Development and Reform Commission, along with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, are set to launch of a review of the market and initiate anti-monopoly probes into certain companies, which were unnamed. The actions are aimed at lowering service prices by the end of the year. The NDRC did not confirm these reports, nor did the nation’s telecom operator. But if accurate, reports say the move would further promote the NDRC’s recent push against anticompetitive behavior.
