Israel: As foreign airliners enter market, domestic cos strike

Israeli airliners demonstrated their disapproval of a recently-passed Open Skies agreement, which allows foreign competition to enter the airline sector, by protesting last weekend. The cabined approved the agreement with 27 nations of the European Union in efforts to ramp-up competition by opening flights and destinations to Israel to be offered by foreign airliners over the next five years. Domestic airlines including El Al, Arkia and Israir went on strike on Sunday outside government buildings to contest the decision; the protests escalated as El Al cancelled all outgoing flights in response to the legislation. The agreement met an overwhelming approval, 19-3, but remains subject to an overhaul of aviation policy.
