Australia/New Zealand: Subsea communications cable raises competition concerns over equal ownership

Plans of a Tasman Global Access subsea cable, which would run between Australia and New Zealand, have resulted in outcries of anti-competitiveness from Internet industry leaders. The plans were first introduced and initiated by Telstra, Telecom NZ and Vodafone; their plans to equally share the cable is what has some crying foul. According to reports, other companies in the industry have expressed desire for the cable to be built by an independent party and not those who dominate the communications sector in both countries; lobby groups have expressed similar concerns.
