Argentina: Former president indicted on ‘illicit association’ and bid corruption

Argentinian Federal judge Julián Ercolini has indicted former president Cristina Fernández. Mrs. Fernández has been charged with illicit association and fraudulent management of public funds after irregularities were detected in several bid contracts for public works.

    Only a few days prior Ercolini also dismissed charges against the owners of the El Clarín, La Nación and La Prensa newspapers – vicious opponents of Fernández’s administration and that of her late husband, Néstor Kirchner (2003-2007). The papers were involved in the Press Paper case, accused of having benefitted from a monopoly on newspaper-grade paper during the 1976-1983 military government.

    Former president Kirchner took to social networks to speak out against the decision, calling the legal figure of “illicit association” an old tool for political repression now being revived by her opponents.
