Argentina: Pressure from cooperatives pushes Quadruple Play back to 2020

The political group Cambiemos reached an agreement with the Peronist section of the Argentine Senate to approve soon an opinion to the short telecommunications law, which would enable telephone companies to offer satellite television services and offer services called ‘quadruple play’ without the need for invest in fiber optics.

    The authorization will now be granted as of July 2020, a year and a half longer than originally planned. the decision represents a small triumph for the cooperative companies of the interior of the country, where the localities of less than 100,000 inhabitants will have to wait until 2022.

    Another change agreed in the pre-opinion was to restrict the right that telephone companies will have to use the passive infrastructure of other information and communication technology operators. These companies no longer “must” cede their inactive capital and are only obliged to provide it under certain conditions.
