Argentina: Protesters gather against Bayer/Monsanto merger

Argentine environmental groups gathered in front of global seed giant Monsanto’s offices in Buenos Aires, protesting to express their concerns about the advancement of Genetically Modified (GMO) crops.

    This was the seventh such protest held against American firm Monsanto, leader in the production of GMO seeds, although according to specialists the recent merger with pharmaceutical giant Bayer could play a role in the increased impact of the protests.

    The global merger between the agro-chemical giants could generate potentially anti-competitive concentration effects. The situation could have a particularly strong impact for Argentina, as it is considered one of the world’s leading exporters of GMO products.
