Australia: Watchdog probes alleged egg price-fixing, say sources

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has opened an investigation into the nation’s egg market, including the Australian Egg Corporation, for suspicion of fixing the price of eggs.

    A report, released Monday, confirmed that various executives within the Australian Egg Corporation were interviewed as part of the investigation. Both the group and the ACCC, however, declined to comment on the matter.

    Reports say the probe may have stemmed from an earlier case looking to crack down on misleading claims that eggs were from “free range” chickens.

    The egg industry in Australia is worth $1.6 billion every year.
