Qantas has cut fuel surcharges on its international flights in a move that will save frequent flyers money but won’t reduce fares. They said its overall fares would not fall as a result of the fuel surcharge being gradually absorbed into base fare.

Australian Competition and Consumer Commission chairman Rod Sims said the regulator would query Qantas as early as this week over why a surcharge would remain in place.

If the ACCC determines either airline was misleading or deceptive, action taken could range from a warning letter to filing a court case that could lead to substantial penalties.
