Botswana: Major bank probe abandoned to lawyers’ disappointment

The Competition Authority of Botswana has announced that its investigation in to major banks, including Barclays Bank Botswana Limited and First National Bank Botswana Limited, will no longer continue. Authorities first issued a probe of the banks after receiving complaints that they favored specific law firms for legal advice and services, barring other firms from competing for the banks’ work. In a statement, the Authority found that while such a process for choosing firms did exist, that process was not found to be anticompetitive, especially as the banks routinely review the panels on which the lawyers serve.
