Canada: Bell CEO tells regs to ‘bring the competition on’

Bell CEO George Cope said Tuesday Canadian telco operators should be opened up to competition and allow the market to determine its players, telling listeners of the annual BMO media and telecom conference that Bell is not afraid of major competition.

”There’s nothing to be afraid of,” Cope said. “Bring the competition on.”

Current policy within Canada restricts foreign ownership of major domestic telco companies, including Bell, Telus and Rogers. Smaller companies with less than 10 percent of market control do not have foreign ownership limits, however. The three main players have argued that such restrictions, established to boost competition, should be listed.

The remarks were made just weeks after Verizon Communications squashed rumors that it was eyeing the Canadian market as a new market.
