Canada: Communications watchdog prefers gov’t wireless co over Verizon entrance
Canada’s Communications, Energy and Paperworks president Dave Coles spoke out against the rumored entrance of US wireless giant Verizon’s entrance into the Canadian market, issuing a press release that instead calls for a government-established telecommunications company to act as the market’s fourth major competitor. Rumors of Verizon’s entrance into Canada have been running for several weeks as the company explores a possible buyout of one of Canada’s smaller telco operators. It’s a controversial plan, as Canadian policy prohibits Canadian telco companies from making such acquisitions. In a statement, Coles questioned the need to give “a slew of benefits to a gigantic US-based corporation.” But reports say current wireless operators will likely disagree with the idea.
