Canada: Telco, competition watchdogs strengthen ties

 |  September 25, 2013

Canada’s telecommunications watchdog and competition regulator have strengthened ties with each other in order to better serve consumers, the agencies announced this week after signing a Letter of Agreement.

The Letter reportedly calls for greater cooperation between the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission and the Competition Bureau. The two have agreed to share best practices and hold joint training exercises in competition law to more efficiently reinforce competition policy.

In a statement, the CRTC’s chairman Jean-Pierre Blais said the agreement will allow the watchdogs to grow their “longstanding relationship” where the two authorities’ interests overlap. Both firms review mergers within the nation’s telco industry.
