Canada: Unfair pricing probe cut short by Competition Bureau

Canada’s Competition Bureau said Friday that it is suspending its investigation into Canadian National Railway, launched following allegations of anticompetitive pricing, because of insufficient evidence in the case, according to reports.

    In a statement, the Bureau announced that it believed “at this time, there is insufficient evidence to support further investigation into this matter.” The probe was initiated following claims that CN enforced pricing rules for lumber shipments in Vancouver that were alleged to be unfair. The company is a top destination for companies to have lumber products transported.

    While the Bureau decided to end the investigation, the regulator did find that Canadian National “considered implementing a pricing strategy intended to exclude certain of its transloading competitors,” but ultimately the company’s conduct did not affect prices or result in lessened competition.
