Canada/Germany: Toronto firm files class action vs. German automakers

Not even a week after the German automakers’ cartel was revealed, Toronto law firm Strosberg Sasso Sutts LLP has started a class action lawsuit against the car makers.

    The lawsuit specifically targets BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche and Mercedes-Benz and is seeking CAD$1 billion (US$795.06 million) in damages plus an addition CAD$100 million (US$79.6 million) in punitive damages.

    The firm alleges that the German companies “conspired to set the price, output, innovation, and technical standards of components used in the motor vehicles they manufactured, and that were sold in Canada.”

    The class action has not been certified yet, but David Wingfield, lead attorney for the class action lawsuit, says that he expects that though this may be the first lawsuit against the automakers, he doubts it will be the last.
