CCI hands down cease & desist order for Motion Pictures Association’s anticompetitive rules

The Competition Commission of India has found that the Motion Pictures Association abused its dominant position in the market for film production, distribution, and exhibition. The CCI agreed with UTV Software Communications’ claims that the MPA’s rules were anticompetitive. They prevent MPA members from dealing with non-members; the rules also require registering films before release, and impose a holdback period on film distribution. As a result, the CCI passed a cease and desist order requiring MPA to drop the problematic rules.
