Chile: Looking for merger, Latam, American and IAG airlines offer new compromises

 |  May 15, 2017

Latam Airlines, American Airlines and the IAG Group, which includes British Airways and Iberia, have announced a series of measures intended to convince Chilean authorities to unblock their proposed joint operation agreements. Chile is the only remaining jurisdiction yet to clear the deal, which would formalize coordination among the three One World Alliance members.

The country’s antitrust court is currently reviewing possible market consequences of the agreements signed last year between Latam, IAG and American Airlines – all members of the One World alliance – after accepting a request from a tourism guild.

To ensure a favorable court decision, airlines have pledged to increase the number of seats on non-stop flights between Chile-United States / Canada and Chile-Europe, as well as to maintain a minimum bid between the Santiago-Madrid and Santiago routes -Miami based on the 2016 offer.

The firms also pledged to facilitate the entry and permanence of competing airlines in some routes through interline agreements of distribution, fee-sharing and access to frequent flier programs.
