Chile: Unilever accused of uncompetitive practices

Detergent companies Maritano and Cleaner have filed a complaint against Unilever before the National Economic Prosecutor’s Office (FNE), accusing the multinational of applying predatory prices. Unilever is the undisputed leader in the detergent segment, with up to 65% market share.

    In June of this year Maritano, known for its “Popeye” brand, denounced the multinational for anti-competitive practices and breach of the conciliatory agreement signed in 2014 by various players in the sector.

    Maritano, accompanied by others, claimed that Unilever monopolises shelf spaces and makes predatory offers that hinder competition, in order to “suffocate” other detergent companies.
