China: Taiwan FTC Commissioner speaks against print media merger

A Commissioner of the Taiwan FTC has spoken out against a planned merger between Next Magazine and the China Times Weekly, saying the deal will likely hamper competition in the media industry and set its own agenda for supplying news. Commissioner Sun Li-chun made the argument after representatives from several government entities were asked to comment on the subject of preventing media monopolies. Sun also said that the Taiwan FTC will most likely investigate the merger, though declined to say whether he thinks a monopoly would result from the deal.
