Qualcomm’s fine and subsequent settlement to lower royalty fees has opened an opportunity for local Chinese firms such as Xiaomi and Lenov.
Chinese smartphone companies, which in the past few years have become serious players in the smartphone market and have provided tough competition.
Firms such as Xiaomi., Lenovo Group, and Huawei Technologies could greatly benefit from the Qualcomm saga. Not only the fine incurred on the chip manufacturer from the NDRC, the firm has also acquiesced to the new terms for licensing its technology.
Qualcomm has agreed that it will no longer bundle other patents with the rights to its technology, which is necessary for connecting phones with high-speed wireless networks.Lack of bundeling and lowering of royalty charges will definitely provide an opportunity for Xiaomi and Lenovo to further cement their place in the low-end smartphone segment.
