China: Taxi-hailing app Uber in merger talks with Chinese rival

Uber Technologies is working with a Chinese luxury car dealer to help its partners purchase vehicles at preferential rates, a move that could help the company compete in a market dominated by firms linked to Alibaba Group Holding and Tencent Holdings.

The two companies will explore further cooperation in car sales, finance, vehicle rental and after-sales services, according to the statement.

The partnership could help Uber offer better cars to customers in the high-end market, a segment the company has focused on as it struggles to compete with Didi Dache and Kuaidi Dache, two taxi-hailing applications backed separately by Tencent and Alibaba.
