The latest guidelines arrive as China’s smartphone landscape remains highly competitive, with domestic brands such as Vivo, Xiaomi, Huawei Technologies, Oppo, and Honor holding significant market share alongside U.S. tech giant Apple. Per Reuters, the intention behind the compliance framework is to promote fairer business practices as companies battle for consumers in one of the world’s largest mobile markets.

Apple in particular has seen renewed momentum in China. Earlier reports this month suggested the company recently lifted its market share to about a quarter of total smartphone shipments in the country, according to Reuters. Citing Counterpoint Research, Reuters also noted that sales of the iPhone in China jumped 22% year-on-year in the first month following the release of the iPhone 17 lineup—even as overall device demand cooled.

The updated regulatory approach signals Beijing’s continued effort to balance market growth with stricter enforcement against behavior deemed harmful to competition. As smartphone makers and app platforms adjust to the new framework, industry analysts will be watching how the rules influence pricing, innovation, and partnerships in China’s fast-evolving mobile ecosystem.
