The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) has announced that Citizens Advice will become the consumer protection group that will take on responsibilities previously handled by the Office of Fair Trading and Consumer Focus. Citizens Advice is a charity service that provides advice and education. It will now handle consumer advocacy within unregulated sectors. Consumer affairs minister Norman Lamb lauded the change as creating a single body to which consumers can turn for advice.
Citizens Advice will receive an additional £10 million in public funding for its new responsibilities, on top of the £20 million it currently receives.
