Colombia: Antitrust authorities busy with wireless woes

Colombia’s competition regulator SIC is reportedly issued fines against the nation’s three leading wireless operators for unfair charges to consumers, the latest sanctions in a round of regulatory crackdowns on a highly criticized industry.

    The SIC is also in the midst of an investigation into six operators for customer service days, say reports; the companies could be fined if the SIC finds evidence of the charges.

    Further, telecommunications regulator CRC called for operators to implement automatic compensation to customers who face quality issues in the form of free minutes.

    The regulatory crackdown on the industry has entered the forefront of political concern in recent months as consumers complain of poor quality in call and customer service, forcing regulators to prioritize the matter.
