Court sides with UOKiK to block Energa takeover by PGE group

The Court of Competition and Consumer Protection has upheld the blocked takeover of Energa by Polska Grupa Energetyczna (PGE group). The UOKiK had opposed the $2.3 billion deal in January 2011, on the grounds that the takeover would significantly restrict competition in the market for electric energy. PGE group is Poland’s largest energy producer, and with the addition of Energa, the combined entity could impose sales conditions and raise energy prices.
