EU: After 2 decades, car price report discontinued

 |  September 18, 2013

The European Commission has decided to discontinue its practice of publishing annual car price reports, published for nearly 20 years as a way to gauge the level of competition within the market.

The Commission’s “Report on car prices within the European Union” was last published in 2011 for 2010 car prices.

According to the media, the report was used by regulators to justify policy decisions. In recent years, prices began to converge across member states, evidence the market had healthy competition, according to the Commission.

But with the cancellation of the report, media say the Commission will have a harder time determining policy decisions, especially on block exemptions. The Commission will also face obstacles in recognizing price gaps between nations without the report.
