EU: Almunia balks at Dutch request to review cable merger

European Commissioner Joaquin Almunia denied chances for the Netherlands to review the proposed acquisition of cable firm Ziggo by Liberty Global, calling it “obvious” that the deal will be reviewed by the EU.

    Liberty global is looking to acquire the Dutch firm and the Commission is set to rule on the merger May 8. And while the Netherlands requested to take jurisdiction of the review, Almunia reportedly told reporters, “What I don’t understand is what the Dutch competition authority did the other day, saying ‘I’m much more clever than you, give me the case. No.”

    National competition regulators had requested to review the deal as it would only affect the Dutch cable industry.
