Rumors flew late last week following a meeting between AT&T and the EU’s top telco official, sparking speculation that AT&T could be eying EU giant Vodafone for a possible buyout.
Such an acquisition would potentially send shockwaves throughout the EU’s telecommunications industry, reports said. But according to AT&T, no buyout bid is in the works.
Reports said AT&T head Randall L. Stephenson met with European Commission telco head Neelie Kroes last week to discuss AT&T’s future role in Europe, according to a source.
But despite AT&T’s denial of any pursuit of Vodafone, reports say the company confirmed it reserved the right for a potential bid later on.
Vodafone is currently in its own M&A deal as reports say the UK company is in early talks with Spain’s ONO, sources said.
