EU: Commission lands new Chief Economist

Economics expert Massimo Motta will become the European Commission’s new chief economic. The European Commission has chosen Motta, currently a professor of economics at Barcelona’s Universitat Pompeu Fabra, to succeed Kai-Uwe Kuhn at the Commission’s competition department. Reports say Motta will start his duties by October 1 of this year. The position, first established in 2003, looks to provide solid foundations of economic arguments to support decisions made by the watchdog.

    Also announced by the Commission was the appointment of Linsey McCallum, who has been approved as the new director for antitrust, merger and state-aid work, specifically within the information, communication and media markets. McCallum has been acting director for more than two years.
