EU: Commissioner urges lengthy, though crucial path to telco consolidation

Recent reports from IDATE suggest the Europeans telecommunications market is struggling against its Japanese and US counterparts, an issue the European Commission is looking to solve through EU-wide consolidation of the market. IDATE’s annual DigiWorld YearBook suggests telecommunications companies throughout Europe will strengthen the market through consolidation, though antitrust regulators pose significant hurdles to mergers that would relieve companies of barriers posed by individual member states, say reports. European Commissioner Neelie Kroes urged EU lawmakers to finalize a consolidation plan by Easter of 2014, though he said consolidation should be prioritized within each state.
