EU: Decision leaked for Random House/Penguin merger

A week ahead of schedule, sources say the European Commission has decided to allow the combining of publishers Penguin and Random House without concessions. While the Commission declined to comment on the matter before its April 5 deadline to decide on the deal, approval has already been won in the US and New Zealand. Regulatory approval remains in China, Canada and Australia. The deal would combine the largest EU and the largest US publishers in the companies’ attempts to gain a stronger foothold in the eBooks market within Amazon and Apple, according to reports.
