EU Industry Chief Urges Apple to Open Up Digital Marketplaces

 |  September 26, 2023

Apple and other tech companies have been under increasing pressure to open up their digital marketplaces to other competitors. EU Industry chief Thierry Breton expressed this sentiment during a meeting with Apple CEO Tim Cook in Brussels.

With the newly adopted Digital Station Act, there is a list of do’s and don’ts for tech companies to abide by in order to advance competition.

According to Reuters, Breton also took aim at the Silicon Valley tech whales, stating, “The next job for Apple and other Big Tech, under the DMA (Digital Markets Act) is to open up its gates to competitors. Be it the electronic wallet, browsers or app stores, consumers using an Apple iPhone should be able to benefit from competitive services by a range of providers.” He also noted that while the regulations foster innovation, security and privacy are not compromised.

As it stands, Apple is currently in the process of looking into ways to allow its customers to access third-party services, including payment platforms and digital shopping malls, though how the company responds to this pressure and implements the reform measures set out by the EU remains to be seen.
