EU: Merger remedies fall flat in Ryanair/Aer Lingus deal

In a decision that is sure to summon little surprise, the European Commission has denied Ryanair’s attempt to takeover Aer Lingus, finding 46 routes in which the merger would create a monopoly and noting that proposed remedies by Ryanair “fell short” of easing concerns. In a statement, Commissioner Joaquin Almunia noted that by barring the merger, the Commission has “protected 11 million Irish and European passengers” who would have been affected by the merger and, according to the Commission, likely seen price hikes.
