EU: State aid to steel sector brings heated debate with re-opening of Belgium case

Three years after the case was first opened, the European Commission has decided to take a second look at state aid given by Belgium to steel company Duferco. According to reports, the Commission re-opened the case to determine the legality of funds issued; the case also gives momentum to a debate within the European Commission over how much states should aid an ailing steel market. The Commission is reportedly working to draft a proposal to help the market through the use of state aid. Despite the news, a formal probe has not been launched into the company, which stands as one of the largest steel producers in the world. The company was forced to close one of its plants earlier this year as declining demand brings financial woes to steelmakers.
