EU: Telco authorities abandon wireless price cap plans

Telecommunications regulators across the EU are reportedly planning to scrap original plans to place price caps on wireless costs, a move that would likely boost earnings for top telcos including Orange and Telefonica.

    According to reports, news media have seen the proposal that recommends allowing wireless carriers to set their own prices for fixed calls both for their customers and for operators that use their networks. The suggestion backtracks from earlier reports that regulators were planning on setting price caps that some say would have allowed smaller competitors to more easily compete.

    But without price caps, top telcos argue they can more quickly implement new infrastructure.

    The pricing proposals are part of the EU’s broader plans to overhaul its telecommunications sector to boost competitiveness in the global market. Reports say even without price caps, authorities will still be able to regulate prices should they find reduced competition in a market.
