EU: Telco group claims Commission has not addressed merger concerns

A top telco industry group is calling upon the European Commission to more adequately address industry players’ desire to strike more mergers, claiming the deals are the only way to stay afloat as infrastructure costs rise.

According to reports, wireless operator advocate GSMA argues European Commissioner for the Digital Agenda Neelie Kroes has not adequately addressed telco’s concerns of increasing network infrastructure costs in her quest to establish a single wireless market across the EU.

In a phone interview, GSMA executive Tom Phillips told reporters that the group’s biggest need in Europe “is to eliminate some of the duplicate investment in network infrastructure” by being allowed to strike merger deals in various nations including Germany and Ireland.
