EU: Top EC presidential candidate reveals stance on telco merger regime

A leading candidate for the European Commission’s presidency spoke to the Financial Times to discuss his stance on telco mergers in the region, revealing in an interview that he would promote wireless consolidation by altering antitrust rules.

    ”First thing we should do is re-think the application of our competition rules in digital markets,” Jean-Claude Juncker told reporters.

    Reports say Juncker has hinted that intense telco merger scrutiny is contradictory to the EU’s campaign for a single telco market and an end to roaming charges.

    ”We should, in my view, also apply EU competition law with a continental spirit,” the candidate said when reflecting on the Commission’s encouragement of telcos to think on a “continental scale.”
