Germany: EU probe launched into nation’s potentially anticompetitive energy cost discounts

The European Commission has reportedly launched a prove into energy price reductions given to industrial clients within Germany to investigation whether the discounts are a hidden form of state aid whether those discounts put electricity competitors in other EU Member States at a competitive disadvantage. According to the Commission, $390 million has already been discounted to large electricity consumers who were exempt from paying network charges. Reports say that Germany implemented the exemptions to prevent further rises in electricity costs; the nation is progressively switching from nuclear power to renewable energy sources.
