Germany: Government plans to dump telco, railway stakes

 |  November 11, 2014

The German government is reportedly considering selling its stakes in telco Deutsche Telekom, rail operator Deutsche Bahn and mail service Deutsche Post, a move that would raise money as officials face mounting pressure to up spending on infrastructure.

Reports cite government documents that reveal plans to reduce government holdings in both companies; those plans are set to be approved by Chancellor Angela Merkel on Wednesday, according to reports.

The asset sales are likely part of Merkel’s plans to balance the federal budget, say reports, and boost infrastructure spending.

The nation’s Federal Cartel Office had previously recommended that the government sell its shares in Deutsche Telekom and Deutsche Post.
