India: Authorities consider ending telco price-setting freedoms

    The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India announced Wednesday that it is considering ending this freedom of telcos if they hike prices beyond current base rates.

    The TRAI has recently suggested lowering rate caps for leased telco lines and is reportedly considering new rules on spectrum sharing as well. Currently, base rates are the maximum rates operators can charge for wireless calls and services; most companies charge less than those rates, say reports.

    But should those raise rise, authorities may intervene, though TRAI noted that it would examine each instance on a case-by-case basis.
