India: CCI clobbers cobblers for anticompetitive behavior

The Competition Commission of India announced a fine issued to eleven shoe-makers for anticompetitive behavior on Wednesday. Reports say the specific violations included rigging bids in a tender initiated by the Ministry of Commerce for the manufacturing of ankle boot soles. Further, the CCI issued a “cease and desist” order on the companies, barring them from such behavior in the future. The regulator first probed the issue following a complaint of bid-rigging by the Directorate General of Supplies and Disposals under the Commerce Ministry, which reportedly noticed patterns in the bids.
