The Competition Commission of India has voiced skepticism that the mega-merger between cement firms Lafarge and Holcim will not harm competition.
According to reports, the CCI has asked France’s Lafarge and Switzerland’s Holcim for more information regarding the transaction, which would result in the world’s largest cement conglomerate. The companies are said to be already in the process of divesting assets to secure regulatory clearance for their merger, though most of those sales are likely to take place in Europe, reports say.
In a statement issued Saturday, the CCI said the deal “is likely to have an appreciable adverse effect on competition.” The companies were therefore asked to publish more information regarding the deal on their websites and in four leading daily newspapers in India, reports say.
