India: Court stops CCI’s telecom probe

On Thursday, September 21, the Bombay High Court put a stop to the Competition Commission of India’s (CCI) order to investigate the cartelisation allegation against three of the nation’s telecom companies: Bharti Airtel, Vodafone India, and Idea Cellular.

    Justice Anoop V Mohta said that the regulator’s order was “illegal”, based on “irrelevant material.”

    The allegations were made by Reliance Jio Infocomm which complained that the three telecoms had formed a cartel to deny interconnection points to the newcomer, resulting in calls made by its customers to the networks of the rivals failing.

    The CCI ordered the investigation in May and Idea Cellular and Bharti Airtel went to the High Court in June.
