India: Media overhauls have companies scrambling for regulation backtrack

Various media houses have reportedly vocalized strong opposition to the proposed overhauls by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, whose plans include various new guidelines for television broadcasting as well as cross-media ownership. According to reports, online news publishers are asking TRAI to ditch their proposals and instead work with regulators like the Competition Commission of India to strengthen competition in the sector. The suggestions took place at an open house of deliberations organized by the media regulator, where companies argued that a free market must be preserved – without regulations – to secure the integrity of news reporting.
