Indonesia Lifts TikTok Suspension After Company Shares Requested Data

Indonesia has reinstated TikTok’s operating license after the company complied with government demands to provide data concerning user activity during a late-August surge in live traffic. According to Bloomberg, the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs lifted the temporary suspension after TikTok submitted the requested information related to TikTok Live monetization and traffic patterns from August 25 to 30.

    Alexander Sabar, a director general at the ministry, confirmed that TikTok had met its obligations, saying in a statement on Saturday that the decision was made following a letter dated October 3—the same day the suspension was announced. The ministry had previously cited TikTok’s failure to meet its obligations as a private electronic system operator when it refused to hand over complete user data during a period of nationwide protests.

    Per Bloomberg, the demonstrations in question were triggered by the death of a delivery driver, which led to an escalation in social media activity. Authorities had requested full access to TikTok’s user data to monitor online behavior during that period. The platform’s earlier reluctance to comply prompted officials to freeze its license temporarily.

    TikTok explained in a September 23 letter that internal policies prevented full compliance with Indonesia’s data request. The company reportedly provided partial information before eventually submitting the complete dataset sought by regulators. According to Bloomberg, TikTok also paused its live streaming services on August 30 as protests intensified, resuming operations several days later when tensions subsided.

    The case underscores the growing regulatory pressure faced by the Chinese-owned platform in Indonesia, one of its largest and most strategically important markets. The country has become a cornerstone of TikTok’s Southeast Asia operations, particularly for its e-commerce arm, TikTok Shop, which contributes significantly to the app’s global merchandise value.
