Ireland: Concessions promised in Three, O2 merger

The owner of Ireland-based wireless operator Three Ireland, Hutchinson Whampoa, has reportedly vowed to offer “strong and effective remedies” to the European Commission to ensure the clearance of its acquisition of rival O2.

    Reports say Three confirmed Monday it has received a statement of objections by the Commission that outlines competition concerns of its wireless merger plans. The regulator is reportedly concerned that the acquisition will reduce Ireland’s wireless competition from four to three players, and may hamper smaller rival Ericom from adequately competing.

    While Three declined to name specific remedies it plans to offer, the company said it is “confident” it will receive clearance from the Commission for the deal.
