Italy: Alitalia bailout will need EU notification

Italy’s planned bailout of ailing Alitalia airline will need to be referred to the European Commission, the EU regulator announced Monday.

    The notification is required for authorities to clear the bailout as legal under state aid policy, according to the Commission’s spokesperson.

    The Commission’s update on the bailout came just hours after the International Airlines Group described the $680 million bailout as “illegal,” and called upon EU watchdogs to intervene in the matter.
