Italy: Hutchinson weighs options after Telecom Italia fallout

Following the breakdown of merger talks with Telecom Italia’s wireless operations, Hutchinson Whampoa is reportedly considering other mergers so enter into the Italian telecommunications market. The head of Hutchinson’s local unit 3 Italia, Vincenzo Novari, assured that top competitors in the nation’s wireless market will drop from four to three and, while he did not name specifics, said a deal with Wind Telecomunicazioni – or a revival of talks with Telecom Italia – is possible. “In Italy Hutchinson Whampoa will be a buyer not a seller,” Novari said in an interview. Hutchinson Whampoa is based in Hong Kong.
