Italy/Kuwait: Shell makes disruptive retail divestitures

 |  February 23, 2014

Royal Dutch Shell is poised to shake up Italy’s gas station industry with its announcement that it will sell its retail operations in the nation to Kuwait Petroleum International.

According to reports, Italy has one of the most inefficient petrol station markets in the EU, with twice the number of gas stations as there are in Britain.

The sales were expected, following Shell’s announcement last year it plans to sell its retail, aviation and other operations in Italy.

The transaction will result in KPI’s Q8 brand replacing the Shell brand at the stations.

The deal has yet to receive antitrust clearance, but the companies said they expect it sometime this year.
