Italy: TripAdvisor probe follows look into Expedia, Booking.com

Soon after Italy’s antitrust regulator launched an investigation into hotel and travel booking websites Expedia and Booking.com, reports say authorities are now probing travel review site TripAdvisor.

    The website is reportedly under watch over allegations it does not do enough to ensure fake travel reviews are not posted online. The nation’s Antitrust Authority released a statement Tuesday confirming the probe following complaints about the site from consumers, hotel owners and restaurant owners.

    The investigation follows a probe into Expedia and Booking.com over allegations the sites make unfair agreements with hotels that could be preventing customers from actually getting the best possible fare for their stay. In a statement earlier this week, the authority said that its investigation focuses on certain clauses in contracts made between the booking sites and hotels, noting the clauses “may significantly limit competition.”
